...and I'm sorry, but in what reasonable state of mind should a laptop cost that much? The alternative (wrong) price would've been in the 5k range, so at least it was an easy game for her to win...unless...please don't tell me there are 5k laptops out there?
Are these gaming lappys? High-end ones for animation and other art projects? Paging Denver, maybe you'd know?
At the very least I'm glad she won, and at least she hopefully got a super-premium laptop (though I'm betting she's choosing the cash winnings instead).

One thing I've learned is that there is, in fact, possible to find really expensive versions of anything.

It's not uncommon, but that is quite high for an average Joe's computer

A high end machine can cost that easy. Mine came loaded with lots of extras for the purposes of work.

Price is Right is a good example of "MSRP" vs. actual retail pricing.

Yep, there are $2500 and there are also $5k, but those are mostly of the wariety, you are building yourself. Yes you can build a laptop, but it is ver expensive. Ha.

ToughBooks and fully loaded Alienware gaming computers are usually around the $5k mark. And there are definitely laptops that go above that mark. It's crazy, but they're out there. My girlfriend's brother has a built Alienware... I don't know if I would pay $5k for it but it's seriously awesome.

Dad's laptop was about $6k if I recall correctly. Full-tilt Lenovo W700 with all the fancy shit, but he actually puts it to use.

top of the line Mac book pro starts at $2500. and you can easily configure other brands to be more expensive.

The ruggedized or pretty much any laptop designed for field use seem to all start about around $2500.

Msrp= it's really only worth $1000 but we'll give it an msrp of $2000 so it can be "offered with discounts" bringing it down to $1500. Yay!

The one I am on now was $3700. It's a "desktop replacement". Really powerful but weighs a ton.

I've seen $5k Apples before. They're primarily used for professional reasons. For example, I've seen really spec'd out ones being used on set by dailies editors assembling a rough cut of scenes as they're filmed.

$2,500 non-upgradeable laptop LOL. Screw that. I'd have serious reservations about spending even half of that on a desktop.
Gaming laptops LOL. This one has always seemed bizarre too. Because let's see here, if I can't play a console on a comfy couch, guess I'll settle for a desk and decent chair. Of course I could go look at some terrible dim relatively small LCD screen with a bad keyboard and touchpad and be totally mobile. WAT? WHY?
Curmudgeony rant over.

Yeah. Like the $30K Veloster someone posted the other day. Man, at that point Aretha Franklin needs to pop in and be like "THINK! THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE DROPPING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON."

I've dropped $2k on my PC over 4 years and I thought that was too expensive... and my PC has 3 screens and has enough power to be a tiny god.

As long as you are okay with the weight and un-upgradability of gaming laptops they can be pretty nice to game on, half the time they are the only ones with a half decent screen, to many laptop manufactures don't even make 720p screens the standard screen, trying to find a new laptop with 1080p or better basically puts you in high end business or gaming laptops, and the gaming laptops generally have better gpu's. I would NEVER AGAIN buy one though, they are obsolete in like 6 months if you like eye candy.

Both this current machine and my last were like $1,200-valued laptops, and that was on eBay.
If it was an Apple, though, that's usually how much they cost, although I will tell you the displays are usually worth it.
Just remember that computers are more or less identical to cars.
